Greek police believe a 25-year-old Turkish man who was shot dead in Athens on June 13 was a victim of infighting within Turkish organized crime networks, according to information obtained from Turkish authorities during the investigation.
The victim was killed in the Exarchia district at the intersection of Kallidromiou and Emmanouil Benaki streets. Investigators say a gunman approached him and fired seven shots at his head and face. The man had been in Greece since at least November 2024 under asylum-seeker status. Although he had registered a reception facility in the Votanikos area as his address, he was living in a rented apartment in Exarchia.
Authorities believe the victim was walking his dog when the attacker approached and opened fire at close range. In Greece, he had not come to the attention of authorities for serious crimes and had only been checked in connection with minor offenses. He was not listed among suspected members of Turkish criminal groups operating in the country.
However, information provided by Turkish police indicated that the victim had repeatedly been investigated for serious offenses, including weapons violations, drug possession, armed robbery and assaults. Turkish authorities also identified him as an active member of a criminal organization involved in drug trafficking in Turkey, Greece and other countries.
