A 28-year-old Turkish national has been charged with manslaughter with intent for the murder of a 25-year-old man in Exarchia in mid-June.
The suspect was also charged with aggravated possession of a weapon, supply and possession of drugs for personal use, as well as violation of laws on aliens, and was subsequently referred to an investigating magistrate.
According to what he allegedly told the police, he entered Greece illegally three to four days before the shooting. He allegedly said that he had been recruited through Telegram and paid €18,000 in Istanbul to carry out what he described as a “contract killing.”
The suspect tried to enter the country unsuccessfully the first time. Once in Greece, he stayed one night in Thessaloniki before arriving in Athens, while after the murder on June 13 he changed rentals three times in his attempt to flee undetected.
According to information obtained from Turkish authorities during the investigation, the 25-year-old, also a Turkish national, was the victim of infighting within Turkish organized crime networks, as he allegedly attempted to expand his activities before being targeted by rivals.
