A 28-year-old Egyptian national has been charged with premeditated murder, theft and illegal residency in the killing of Stavros Georgiou, a 73-year-old criminal defense lawyer, authorities said.
The suspect confessed to police, saying: “We argued, and then I grabbed his head and hit it against furniture and walls with all my strength.” He said he met Georgiou through mutual acquaintances, and the two drank together Monday night before going to the lawyer’s office on Tritis Septemvriou Street, where a fight turned deadly. The suspect claimed personal, sexual motives, though investigators have not confirmed this. He admitted taking the victim’s money and laptop.
He was injured during the attack and sought medical care, which helped police identify him. The accused was arrested Wednesday, and had a warrant for alleged sexual abuse of a minor and a rejected asylum application.
