A 43-year-old man who confessed to murdering his landlord was ordered held in pretrial detention Friday following a four-hour court appearance.

The victim, Stavroula Leventaki, 45, was found dead after going missing for 22 days in the Hania area of Crete. The suspect, a North Macedonian national renting her property, admitted killing her after her remains were located. The defendant has expressed remorse and sought forgiveness from the victim’s family, claiming the killing followed an argument and had not been premeditated. His attorney cited his remorse as a factor in the confession.

Police sources noted that forensic evidence was overwhelmingly incriminating.
