A court in the southern town of Sparta on Friday imposed a suspended 11-month prison sentence on a man arrested for keeping his father’s body in a disused hotel’s freezer for years and allegedly cashing in his pension payments.

Police have no initial indication that foul play was involved in the death of the elderly man, although it’s unknown precisely when he died. He was born 90 years ago. The results of a post-mortem have not yet been made public.

The 55-year-old man from the village of Mystras, built next to a mediaeval hilltop town near Sparta, was convicted of making a false statement for telling police making enquiries that his father was away in Athens. His sentence was suspended for three years.

He still faces trial for fraud over the alleged pension payments, with authorities trying to calculate the amount in question.
