The body of a man has been found inside a car spotted on the seabed in the port of Rio in the northern Peloponnese, authorities said Wednesday.

The Coast Guard said that the car sighting was reported Tuesday afternoon. A diver summoned to the spot, at the western quay in Rio port, extracted from the vehicle the unconscious body of a 63-year-old man who was pronounced dead by doctors at the hospital in the nearby city of Patra.

No trace of anybody else was found in the car. The precise circumstances of the incident are under investigation and an autopsy has been ordered.

The Coast Guard said there was no sign of marine pollution from the sunken vehicle.
