A taxi driver was found dead Thursday morning after his vehicle plunged into the sea at the Port of Piraeus.

The incident occurred at Gate E4 of Greece’s largest port under circumstances that remain unclear, the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency reported.

The driver was recovered from the water during a rescue operation involving the Coast Guard, a specialized diving unit and a crane used to lift the vehicle from the sea.

He was taken to Piraeus’ Tzaneio General Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
