A taxi driver has been arrested in Piraeus accused of charging tourists more than double the legal fare for the route they had covered, authorities said Wednesday.
A police statement said the 40-year-old suspect was stopped Tuesday afternoon after demanding €45 from customers he had taken from Monastiraki Square in central Athens to the port of Piraeus.
The legal charge for the route at that time of day is around €20, police said.
The statement added that the suspect had allegedly not switched on the meter in his cab, which is a frequent ploy by taxi drivers intent on overcharging.
