Four taxi drivers have been arrested in a single day at the port of Lavrio south of Athens for overcharging tourists seeking a ride to Athens or a local trip, police said Tuesday.
A police statement said all four, aged 23-60, were arrested early Monday as part of a campaign to crack down on dishonest cabbie practices that has seen a string of arrests in recent months – largely on rides to and from Athens airport or the port of Piraeus.
“The crackdown, which is designed to boost the public’s sense of security, will continue,” the statement said.
Three of the suspects allegedly charged €200 for a return trip from Lavrio to the Acropolis, instead of the legal fare of €150. Police said the fourth asked for €12 – three times the legal sum – to drive customers some 1.5 kilometers from the town of Lavrio to the port.
All four were fined, had their number plates confiscated and face prosecution for overcharging.
