Another taxi driver has been arrested in central Athens for overcharging customers, police said Thursday, in the second such incident in as many days.
A police statement said the suspect was taken into custody Thursday after allegedly demanding double the legal fare – €15 instead of 7.5 – to drive from Lycabettus Hill to Monastiraki Square in the city center.
Police said the suspect had covered the taximeter so that the true charge was not visible, and had tampered with it so that it didn’t issue legal receipts unless he took specific action.
The 50-year-old was arrested Wednesday.
On Tuesday, police detained a cabbie who allegedly demanded €45 from customers he had taken from Monastiraki Square to the port of Piraeus – more than twice the legal charge for the route at that time of day. The man had allegedly not switched on the meter in his cab
