Every weekend in August, a central section of Sofia’s iconic yellow cobblestone boulevard will become a pedestrian-only area as part of the Sofia Municipality’s “Summer of the Cobblestones” initiative.
The project will temporarily close a section of Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd. between Knyaz Alexander I St. and Vasil Levski Blvd. to vehicle traffic. The restriction will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. on Saturday until 10:00 p.m. on Sunday each weekend throughout August.
The municipality said the aim is to give residents and visitors greater access to one of the capital’s most recognizable urban spaces, creating opportunities for walking, outdoor gatherings and a more active use of public areas.
"Sofia needs more vibrant urban spaces where people can meet, communicate and spend time together. Summer on the Pavements is an invitation to see the heart of the city differently – not only as a place we pass through, but as a place where we want to stay," Mayor Vasil Terziev said.
The traffic restrictions will apply only during weekends, while normal movement along the boulevard will resume during the rest of the week. Cars will continue to be able to travel through nearby areas, including G. S. Rakovski Street and the area around Narodno Sabranie Square.
