To improve road safety during one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer, Bulgaria's Road Infrastructure Agency will temporarily restrict the movement of heavy trucks weighing more than 12 tons on key highways and roads on Friday and Sunday afternoons.
The restrictions will apply in both directions on the Trakia Motorway, the Struma Motorway, and on the I-1 road through the Kresna Gorge between the Simitli checkpoint at kilometer 376 and the Kulata border crossing.
On Friday, August 7, trucks over 12 tons will not be allowed to travel on the affected sections between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. On Sunday, August 9, the restrictions will be in force from 3:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
According to the Road Infrastructure Agency, the measure is intended to improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents caused by improper overtaking and long lines of heavy vehicles during periods of intense travel.
Truck drivers traveling to and from Burgas will be able to use the I-6 Sub-Balkan Road as an alternative route. Vehicles heading to or from the Kulata border crossing will be redirected via Road II-19 between Simitli and Gotse Delchev, continuing along Road III-198 and Road III-1981 before reconnecting with I-1 near Kulata. Drivers may also choose other routes within the national road network, provided they comply with existing traffic regulations.
