A deadly crash on Bulgaria’s Trakia highway has become the latest in a worrying series of incidents involving heavy trucks breaking through barriers and causing serious accidents across the country.
The latest incident occurred near the 311th kilometer of the Trakia highway in the Karnobat area, where a truck traveling from Burgas toward Sofia crossed the central guardrail and entered the opposite lane. The vehicle struck two cars carrying three people.
One person died in the crash and remained trapped inside one of the vehicles, while two others were injured and taken for medical treatment. An air ambulance was dispatched to transport the injured victims, with initial reports indicating that at least one of them was in serious condition.
The truck driver was not injured. Preliminary information suggested that a technical failure, reportedly a flat tire, may have caused the driver to lose control of the heavy vehicle and crash through the barrier.
The accident once again placed attention on a disturbing pattern seen on Bulgarian roads in recent weeks. The Trakia highway crash is at least the third major incident in a short period in which a truck has broken through a barrier and struck other vehicles or objects.
