A fatal crash on the Republika Pass claimed the life of a passenger car driver after a head-on collision with a heavy truck late on July 12. The accident occurred near the village of Pchelinovo, close to Gurkovo, at around 9:50 p.m., prompting authorities to close the mountain pass while emergency crews and police worked at the scene.
According to initial information, the collision happened after the car attempted to overtake another vehicle and entered the opposite lane. The truck driver reportedly tried to avoid the impact by swerving, but "the collision was unavoidable," according to early accounts of the incident. The driver of the car died instantly.
Police are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
The Republic Pass is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most dangerous road sections, carrying heavy freight traffic between Danube Bridge 1 and the Turkish border. The combination of constant truck traffic, limited overtaking opportunities, and challenging road conditions has contributed to a long history of serious accidents along the route.
The latest tragedy comes just days after another deadly crash in the same region. On July 10, a 50-year-old driver lost his life in an accident near Maglizh on the Podbalkanski Road, while a 14-year-old passenger sustained critical injuries and remains in serious condition.
