Three people, including an 11-year-old child, were killed and three others were injured in a serious head-on collision between a passenger car and a minibus on the Hemus highway near Shumen. A 7-year-old child was among the injured and remains in life-threatening condition.
The crash happened around noon in a section of the highway where repair works are currently underway near Novi Pazar. Traffic in the area had been reorganized with cones and road signs, and speed limits of 60 km/h and 90 km/h were in place.
According to preliminary information, a Volkswagen passenger car with Shumen registration, carrying five people, crossed into the opposite lane for reasons that remain unclear and collided head-on with an oncoming cargo minibus. The driver of the minibus, a 51-year-old man who was traveling alone and transporting goods, was also injured, but his condition is not life-threatening.
The two adults killed in the crash were the 67-year-old driver of the car and a 48-year-old passenger. The third victim was an 11-year-old child who died while being transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Chief Inspector Veselin Georgiev, head of the Traffic Police in Shumen, said the exact cause of the collision was still being investigated. “A temporary organization is operating in the area. For reasons that are currently unknown, the car entered the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a truck,” he said, adding that all those involved in the accident were residents of Shumen district.
