Two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, were killed in a serious traffic accident in the Smolyan region overnight, after a speeding driver lost control of his car and collided with another vehicle.
The crash occurred after an 18-year-old driver was reportedly traveling at excessive speed. According to preliminary information from the regional Interior Ministry directorate, he lost control of the vehicle, which spun on the road before hitting another car.
Two passengers died in the collision. The 18-year-old driver was detained for 24 hours, while tests for alcohol and drugs came back negative.
The fatal crash comes as another accident involving a young, inexperienced driver has renewed concerns about safety at railway level crossings. An 18-year-old woman with only four months of driving experience crashed into the rear of a passing train at a level crossing near the village of Todorovo in the Isperih area.
Three other people, aged between 15 and 19, were traveling in the car. All four occupants were taken to a hospital in Isperih for examination, but none suffered serious injuries. No one aboard the train was injured, and alcohol and drug tests on both the driver and the train engineer were negative.
