The Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office is preparing to bring the most severe charges against the two drivers believed to be responsible for the devastating crash involving a public transport bus on Chelopeshko Shose in Sofia last night. Prosecutors are expected to charge both men with causing death in a traffic accident with intent, after investigators concluded that the drivers had allegedly organized an illegal street race and were traveling at speeds exceeding 150 km/h shortly before the collision.
The crash, which occurred on Friday evening, has become one of the most serious road tragedies in the capital in recent years. While initial reports confirmed two fatalities, authorities later announced that a third victim had died from injuries sustained in the accident.
According to investigators, participation in illegal racing is regarded as a particularly serious transport-related offense. The prosecution plans to extend the detention of the two drivers for 72 hours and will seek permanent detention in custody from the court in the coming days.
Evidence collection is ongoing. Authorities have taken blood samples, DNA material, and fingerprints from all individuals who were inside the two vehicles involved. Investigators revealed that one of the cars carried two brothers, while three men were traveling in the second vehicle.
