A man identified as Vasil N. Filipov, one of the two drivers accused in a deadly street race in Sofia, is currently living in municipal housing intended for socially vulnerable residents, according to reporting cited from investigative sources. The case is linked to the crash on Chelopeshko Shose, where an alleged illegal race between two cars ended with four fatalities and multiple injuries after one of the vehicles collided with a city bus.

The housing situation has sparked controversy locally. After the accident, the district mayor reportedly questioned whether Filipov genuinely qualified as socially weak and attempted to remove him from the municipal apartment. However, the decision was later overturned by the court, which reinstated his tenancy.

According to documents referenced by investigative media BIRD.bg, the Administrative Court in Sofia City ruled in 2025 that the eviction order issued by the municipality was insufficiently justified. As a result, the municipality not only lost the case but was also ordered to pay 1,000 leva (500 euros) in legal costs to the tenant’s defense. Filipov’s occupancy had originally been approved in 2023 under a municipal order granting him low-rent housing in Botunets, within the Kremikovtsi district. His tenancy was formally terminated in June 2025, but the court challenge reversed that move.
