A court in Varna has decided to keep the 53-year-old driver accused of killing two women after crashing onto a sidewalk under a signed undertaking, rejecting requests to place him back in custody.
The decision came after lawyers representing the victims' families argued that the defendant poses an ongoing risk and could attempt to evade justice.
“If we assume that this man has an epileptic seizure, he is outside and continues to be dangerous to people,” attorney Georgi Radkov told the court.
The deadly crash took place on December 22 last year near Varna’s Kolkhoz Market. According to investigators, the driver was behind the wheel of a BMW traveling at high speed when he passed through the intersection of Drin Street and Dr. Piskyuliev Street before losing control. The vehicle mounted the sidewalk and struck two pedestrians, women aged 53 and 79, who died at the scene.
The driver was taken to a hospital following the collision, where he underwent testing. Authorities reported that his alcohol test was negative, while a blood sample was also collected for drug screening.
