A court in Veliko Tarnovo has sentenced a Turkish truck driver to 10 years in prison for a crash in the Hainboaz Pass that killed a 9-year-old Bulgarian child and seriously injured her parents.

The verdict was issued six months after the accident, which claimed the life of the child, Chrissy, after the heavy truck collided with the family’s car.

The incident happened on January 25 in the area of Mishemorkov Han near Veliko Tarnovo. According to the indictment filed by the Veliko Tarnovo District Prosecutor’s Office, the 65-year-old Turkish citizen Suttan T. was driving a truck tractor with a semi-trailer when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane and crashed into a car carrying a family.

The collision resulted in the child’s death and injuries to the two adults inside the vehicle. After the crash, the truck driver initially left the scene but was later found and detained. He has remained in custody throughout the proceedings.

The case was heard under a summary procedure, based on the prosecutor’s indictment accusing the driver of causing a particularly serious road accident through violations of traffic rules.
