Authorities in Bulgaria have ruled out early assumptions about the causes of the deadly crash on the Trakia highway, where two children and one adult lost their lives after a truck crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a passenger vehicle.

According to the supervising prosecutor from the Yambol District Prosecutor’s Office, Zhivko Iliev, there is currently no evidence supporting claims that the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel or that the vehicle suffered a flat tire before the incident.

The crash occurred at kilometer 290 of the Sofia-Burgas section of the highway, when a heavy goods vehicle travelling in the opposite direction reportedly crossed the central barriers and struck a car carrying five passengers. Two 9-year-old boys from a Sofia football academy and the father of one of them died at the scene.

The children’s coach, Ivan Terziyski, and his wife remain in serious condition at St. Panteleimon Hospital in Yambol. The truck driver, who was not injured, was detained under the Interior Ministry Act, and his alcohol and drug tests came back negative.

“There is no evidence that the truck had a flat tire or that the driver fell asleep,” prosecutor Iliev stated, adding that investigators are still examining all possible scenarios.
