A 46-year-old Greek woman wanted in connection with the 2010 arson attack on an Athens bank that killed three employees is expected to appear before a London court Tuesday to face an extradition request from Greece, the UK’s National Crime Agency has said.
The agency said Westminster Magistrates Court would examine the Greek extradition application.
The woman was arrested Monday morning by National Extradition Unit officials at Gatwick Airport following an international search launched through an Interpol Red Notice, the agency said.
The suspect, who maintains her innocence, has lived in Brighton, England, for at least the past six years. Reports said she had indicated a willingness to return voluntarily to Greece after an arrest warrant was issued against her, but Greek authorities proceeded with the international arrest request.
The case stems from the May 5, 2010, arson attack on a Marfin Bank branch in central Athens during a large anti-austerity protest. Three bank employees, including a pregnant woman, died after the building was set on fire in one of the deadliest episodes of Greece’s financial crisis-era unrest.
