Two police officers have been charged with attempted murder over the shooting of a 20-year-old motorist during a chase in Argos, in the Peloponnese.

The officers appeared before a prosecutor in Nafplio and were given until Friday to prepare their testimony before an investigating magistrate.

According to an earlier police statement, the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. when officers attempted to stop the driver for a routine check. Police said the man accelerated, attempted to strike officers and patrol vehicles, and drove dangerously during the ensuing pursuit.

The chase ended when the vehicle collided with a police car. The suspect then allegedly exited the vehicle and attempted to climb over a wall, at which point two officers opened fire, striking him in the head.

Thirteen shell casings were reportedly found at the scene.
