A 20-year-old man who was shot by police during a vehicle pursuit in the southern Greek city of Argos died from his injuries Sunday.
The man was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Thriasio Hospital near Athens and later to KAT Hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care with a severe gunshot wound to the head. He underwent emergency neurosurgery but later died.
The development came a day after an investigating magistrate and prosecutor ordered the pretrial detention of the two police officers charged over the shooting that took place Wednesday.
The officers denied intending to harm the man, saying they fired warning shots after he allegedly attempted twice to ram their patrol cars during the chase.
The victim’s family rejected that account, saying he was unarmed and had autism spectrum disorder. Authorities recovered 16 shell casings and an air gun near the scene. Ballistic and forensic examinations are underway.
