Two officers have been arrested and face a disciplinary probe after a motorist who allegedly tried to dodge arrest and endangered police with his vehicle was shot and injured during a chase, authorities said Wednesday.

A police statement said the incident occurred before dawn near the town of Argos in the southern Peloponnese region, when officers tried to stop a car driver for a routine check.

It said the motorist accelerated and attempted to run over officers on foot as well as to hit patrol cars, and “drove in a particularly dangerous manner” during the ensuing road chase.

The fugitive finally had to stop after ramming a police car, exited his vehicle and tried to climb over a wall. At that point, the statement said, two officers fired shots and injured him. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, and from there to one in Athens, the statement said, without providing further information on his identity or condition.

It said the two officers face charges of grievous bodily harm and firearms offences, while an investigation is under way into the incident.
