A group of police officers came under a mob attack Thursday during an operation in Ano Liosia, on the northern outskirts of Athens, after attempting to stop a suspicious vehicle for inspection, according to police reports.

One police officer was injured, reportedly suffering injuries from a stone and a bite during the incident.

Authorities said motorcycle police officers signaled the driver to pull over, but the vehicle allegedly sped away, with the driver reportedly attempting to ram police motorcycles during the escape attempt.

A pursuit followed, and officers later located the vehicle parked near a Roma settlement in the area. Police, who had called for reinforcements, approached the vehicle when a large group of Roma, numbering about 80, reportedly emerged and allegedly attacked the officers with stones and bottles.
