The police cybercrime squad has arrested two social media users for allegedly posting calls for attacks on a policeman whom they falsely blamed for a fatal traffic accident, authorities said.
A police statement said the two suspects were arrested late Tuesday and face charges of incitement to criminal acts and violence, threatening, verbal assault, defamation and breaches of privacy laws.
The arrests were connected with a fatal June 4 accident in the Athens district of Kallithea in which a motorcyclist died. The police statement said that the suspects published false accusations against a specific policeman whom they named and wrongly identified as responsible for the crash.
On Monday, police had issued a first statement denying claims that officers had been involved in the Kallithea crash. The statement said that while the police had been looking for the motorcycle in connection with potential traffic violations, no chase or attempt to stop the bike was under way at the time of the accident.
