Five days after a 72-year-old man was found dead in the back seat of a parked car in Ano Liosia, in northern Athens, police announced they have arrested two men in connection with the case.
Authorities had a breakthrough when the two suspects, aged 68 and 72, appeared voluntarily on August 3 at the Western Attica Crime Investigation and Prosecution Sub-Directorate. In their statements, they stated that the previous night they had driven with the 72-year-old to Agios Stefanos to remove cables from a transformer of power distribution network operator DEDDIE.
According to them, during the attempt, the 72-year-old was electrocuted and fell from a height. Instead of notifying the authorities, however, they claimed that they took him by car to Ano Liosia, where they abandoned him in the vehicle. He was found dead there on the afternoon of August 1 by a Civil Protection unit patrolling the area for possible fires.
According to police sources, their statements presented contradictions regarding the events that followed the injury of the 72-year-old, while they were evaluated in combination with the other evidence that had been collected during the preliminary investigation. The two men were arrested the next day.
