Police in Athens have launched a murder investigation after an autopsy determined that an 80-year-old man found dead in his home in the Galatsi district last Saturday died as a result of a criminal act.

According to the forensic examiner, the victim’s cause of death was airway obstruction, with investigators suspecting that he was likely smothered with a pillow.

Blood stains were found on the pillow, which has been sent for forensic examination.

The main entrance to the apartment showed no signs of forced entry, while only the victim’s bedroom appeared to have been disturbed. Authorities believe the perpetrator may have entered the apartment, searched the bedroom for a specific item, found it and then fled the scene.

Police are examining security camera footage from the surrounding area and collecting witness statements in an effort to identify the suspect.
