Ghaziabad: A day after a newly created U-turn on the Hapur Road resulted in traffic chaos, the Ghaziabad traffic police restored its original traffic plan, while dismantling the newly created U-turn on Monday, officials said. The step was initiated for a signal-free movement of traffic at the Ingraham school intersection, and is also used for traffic movement between Kavi Nagar and Raj Nagar. (Sakib Ali/HT Photo)On Saturday, the traffic police had introduced the new U-turn on the Hapur Road.Under the plan, the traffic intersection near the Ingraham school crossing was closed after being plugged with cemented barriers, and the new U-turn was created about 100 metres towards the Hapur Chungi intersection, said officials. The step was initiated for a signal-free movement of traffic at the Ingraham school intersection, which is on the busy Hapur Road and also used for traffic movement between Kavi Nagar and Raj Nagar. So, the traffic coming in from Raj Nagar District Centre or from the district magistrate’s office, had to move straight towards the Hapur Chungi intersection, they added. But in case these commuters wished to move towards Kavi Nagar or go towards Old Bus Stand, they had to make use of the new U-turn. For the new U-turn, the police had segregated part of the Hapur Road with cemented barriers on either side.Police officials said that the U-turn was dismantled and the barriers placed at the Ingraham school intersection were also removed.“Normal traffic like earlier was restored, and the U turn was dismantled. The Ingraham school intersection was also opened up. We tried to experiment with seamless and signal-free movement of the traffic on the Hapur Road. But the new U-turn created some traffic issues and was removed. Normal traffic was restored on Monday,” Trigun Bisen, DCP (traffic), told HT.“The new U-turn created a traffic bottleneck as vehicles were facing problems in taking turns, and this slowed down the traffic on either side of the Hapur Road. Further, the placement of barriers left only a single lane available for traffic going to and coming from the Hapur Chungi intersection. The inner lane on each side was used by the vehicles making use of the U-turn,” said Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Shastri Nagar.Notably, the Hapur Road near the Ingraham school intersection has a huge inflow and outflow of vehicles due to the presence of the district magistrate’s office, the office of the police commissioner, the Ghaziabad district court, and prominent commercial markets in the vicinity.
