Civil protection officials issued an alert for residents of Petra, a semi-mountainous settlement at the foot of Mount Helicon in Viotia, central Greece, after a blaze broke out nearby.

Authorities said that while the village is currently not in danger, residents should evacuate towards the town of Livadia, located further north.

A second fire in Viotia that started earlier in the area of Agios Vasileios, on the northeastern coast of the Gulf of Corinth, has been brought under control, the Fire Department said.

The Fire Department reinforced its crews, bringing 70 firefighters with 20 fire engines, three units on foot, three fire-dropping aircraft and three helicopters in the area.
