A wildfire that broke out around midday Wednesday in a forested area in Viotia, northwest of Athens, has spread toward the Athens-Lamia highway, prompting authorities to close the section between Kastro and Thiva due to heavy smoke and reduced visibility.

No injuries or material damage have been reported so far.

Traffic diversions have been made. Vehicles heading toward Athens are being rerouted from the Akraifnio junction to Thiva, while traffic toward Lamia is diverted from Thiva to Kastro.

A strong firefighting force has been deployed, including more than 100 firefighters, six ground teams, and 27 fire engines. From the air, 11 aircraft and three helicopters are operating, one of which is coordinating aerial efforts.

Authorities note that scattered houses are located in the wider area.
