More than 100 firefighters were battling a wildfire burning through low vegetation near the industrial town of Aspropyrgos, west of Athens.
The fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday in scrubland north of the Sofo area and was spreading toward nearby mountains. Fire officials said no homes were under immediate threat.
By late afternoon, 108 firefighters, six specialized ground crews, 32 fire engines and five helicopters, including one coordinating aircraft, had been deployed to contain the blaze. Volunteers, municipal water tankers and heavy machinery were also assisting.
