Dozens of firefighters, assisted by waterbombing aircraft, quickly brought under control a wildfire near the town of Keratea south of Athens Thursday, authorities said.

The Fire Service said more than 50 firefighters with 13 fire engines and three waterbombing helicopters grappled with the blaze near the monastery of Panaghia Theoskepasti.

A total 28 wildfires broke out over the past 24 hours, the Fire Service said, and 25 of them were swiftly put out.

Predictions for Friday set most of the country at a low risk of wildfire.
