Dozens of firefighters assisted by a water-dropping helicopter were battling Sunday to extinguish a new wildfire in the southern Corinthia region.

The Fire Service said that more than 50 firefighters with 14 fire engines and volunteers were trying to put out the forest fire near the village of Skalosia.

The blaze came a day after two wildfires broke out near the villages of Angelokastro and Ano Almyri, also in Corinthia, in the northeastern Peloponnese. Both blazes were brought under control later Saturday.

Dozens of wildfires are recorded every day in Greece’s dry, hot summers.
