A new wildfire broke out late Friday on the southern island of Crete as firefighters managed to tame two blazes in northern Greece and one in the Corinth region of the Peloponnese.
The Fire Service said 40 firefighters with 11 fire engines were striving to contain the fire raging through forest and farmland near the village of Achladia in the Siteia region of Crete. No damage to property or injuries were immediately reported.
Earlier Friday, three blazes that broke out in the Halkidiki peninsula, whose coastline is highly popular with tourists, and in the mountains of Kozani in northern Greece, as well as near the village of Stefani in the Corinth region, were largely contained.
Local officials told state ERT broadcaster that the Stefani fire started in a solar panel park.
Scores of homes have been burnt in a series of wildfires in recent days in western Attica, Crete and the Peloponnese, while four firefighters and a helicopter pilot have died.
