Firefighters on Monday battled three wildfires on the island of Crete, most of which has been designated as at a major risk of fire together with islands in the central Aegean Sea, while civil protection authorities ordered one village evacuated.

No injuries or damage to property were immediately reported.

The Fire Service said two water-dropping helicopters were flying sorties to tame a blaze raging through forest and farmland in the Ierapetra region of eastern Crete, together with 49 firefighters and 13 fire engines on the ground.

Residents and visitors at the village of Bramiana were sent a push alert on their phones to evacuate as a precaution towards the town of Ierapetra.

In the island’s central Iraklio region, one helicopter was dropping water to help 30 firefighters with nine fire engines address a wildfire in the Gazi area, while earlier another blaze was brought under partial control in the Viannos area of Iraklio.
