More than a dozen water-bombing aircraft were mobilised Friday to help ground forces battle two new forest fires in the northern resort region of Halkidiki and the hills above Corinth in the southern Peloponnese region.
Civil protection authorities sent a push alert to mobile phones near the village of Stefani in the Corinth region, urging people in the area to be prepared for a potential evacuation order.
Seven aircraft flew sorties to assist 53 firefighters with 16 fire engines, while drones were deployed to the area to join in the effort. The blaze was raging through forest and farmland, the Fire Service said.
A further six aircraft were dropping water loads over a blaze in a forest near the village of Monopigado in Halkidiki, some 40 kilometers southeast of Thessaloniki, while 61 firefighters with 22 fire engines and volunteers battled the flames on the ground.
No damage to property or injuries were immediately reported from either blaze.
