Water-bombing aircraft took off Monday to help firefighters on the ground battle three wildfires in the southern Peloponnese region and in northern Greece, the Fire Service said Monday, amid warnings of a high fire risk from strong winds.

No injuries or direct threat to inhabited areas were immediately reported.

In the vicinity of Varda in the western Peloponnese, some 80 firefighters backed by 19 fire engines, volunteers and four aircraft struggled to contain a blaze burning through forest and farmland.

Further south, near Harokopio in the Messinia region, four water-dropping planes and a helicopter were deployed to help 40 firefighters battling a wildfire burning forest and farmland.
