Four waterbombing planes and a helicopter flew sorties Tuesday to assist ground forces battling a wildfire on the island of Evia north of Athens, authorities said.
More than 40 firefighters, with 11 fire engines, as well as heavy machinery and water tankers provided by local authorities, were struggling to contain the blaze.
The fire broke out near the village of Loutsa on central Evia, and was burning through forestland and scrub, the Fire Service said.
Evia, together with the Greater Athens region, the northern Peloponnese, Rhodes, Thrace, Halkidiki and the Thessaloniki region, are at a high risk of wildfire Tuesday.
