Four water-bombing aircraft were deployed Thursday to assist ground forces fighting a wildfire in the region of Arta in western Greece, authorities said.
The Fire Service said the blaze was burning through a mix of forest and farmland, near the village of Strongyli that’s some 20 kilometers from the seaside town of Arta. More than 20 firefighters with eight fire engines were trying to extinguish the blaze on the ground.
Civil protection authorities issued an alert to people in the nearby village of Aghios Spyridon to be on alert for potential evacuation should the order be given.
There were no immediate reports of damage to property or injuries. On Tuesday, a forest fire near Thessaloniki killed two people who were trapped in a house that was burnt down.
