Five water-dropping aircraft on Friday took off to help ground forces fighting a wildfire blazing through a forest on the foothills of the Agrafa Mountains in western Thessaly, authorities said.

The Fire Service said 25 firefighters with eight fire engines were battling the blaze on the ground. It broke out near the picturesque village of Kanalia close to Mouzaki, some 14 kilometers northwest of the town of Karditsa.

The cause of the wildfire was not immediately known.

Earlier Friday, a forest fire near Kalamitsi in the northern Kavala area was quickly brought under control by 35 firefighters with 7 fire engines and volunteers, assisted by two water-dropping aircraft.
