Four water-dropping aircraft flew sorties Wednesday to assist dozens of firefighters and volunteers battling a large wildfire near the town of Orchomenos in central Greece, authorities said.
The Fire Service said more than 40 firefighters were in action on the ground, with 12 fire engines. The blaze was burning through forest and farmland. There were no initial reports of damage to property.
Earlier Wednesday, firefighters brought under partial control a large wildfire near Aspropyrgos, on the western outskirts of Athens. Five aircraft and more than 50 firefighters were involved in the effort.
On Thursday, the Greater Athens region, Evia, the northeastern Peloponnese, the eastern Aegean Sea islands and eastern Crete are at a high risk of wildfire, according to civil protection authorities’ projections.
