Firefighters are battling a wildfire in southern Evia that has forced the evacuation of a settlement as flames threaten homes.

The blaze broke out around noon in forestland near the village of Latas and spread toward the Profitis Ilias area, where residents were urged via a 112 emergency alert shortly before 2 p.m. to evacuate towards the coastal town of Aliveri.

The area had been placed under a high fire risk warning for Tuesday.

A force of 80 firefighters, supported by a specialized forest firefighting unit, 24 fire engines, six firefighting aircraft and three helicopters, is involved in the operation. The local municipality has also deployed water tankers.

The fire was initially detected by a fire service surveillance drone, which continues to provide real-time information on the blaze’s spread.
