A wildfire broke out in a forested area near the village of Spathari on the island of Evia on Saturday afternoon, triggering a large-scale firefighting operation.

The blaze erupted shortly after 4 p.m., but officials said no homes or critical infrastructure were immediately threatened.

Fifty-four firefighters, backed by 21 fire engines, eight water-dropping aircraft and three helicopters, were deployed to contain the fire. Municipal water tankers also joined the effort.

The area was under a Category 4, or very high, wildfire risk warning. A specialized fire investigation unit was dispatched to determine the cause of the blaze.
