A wildfire broke out Wednesday in Loutropyrgos, near Megara northwest of Athens, burning low vegetation as Greece faced a very high risk of wildfires.
The Fire Service said it was notified of the fire at about 1.45 p.m. and deployed 32 firefighters, 11 vehicles and a specialized wildfire-fighting team. Three aircraft and two helicopters were dropping water on the flames.
Residents in Loutropyrgos, Tolka and Neraki received an emergency alert through Greece’s 112 system urging them to evacuate toward Nea Peramos via the old national highway.
The Municipality of Mandra was assisting with water tankers, while drones equipped with thermal and optical cameras were being used to monitor the fire.
