Wildfires raged across parts of Greece on Friday, with firefighters battling multiple fronts as strong winds fueled the flames and forced authorities to evacuate several communities.
An out-of-control wildfire was burning in Xironomi, in the regional unit of Viotia in central Greece, where residents received repeated emergency alerts through the 112 warning system. Evacuations were ordered for Xironomi and nearby villages, including Agios Vasileios, Agios Nikolaos and Alyki.
A second fire broke out in Kalamaki near Thiva, also in Viotia, with the local mayor describing the blaze as extremely dangerous. Strong ground forces and aerial firefighting units were deployed to both areas.
Firefighting aircraft were also mobilized to tackle a blaze in Fichti, near the archaeological site of Mycenae, in the northeastern Peloponnese region of Argolida, where five aircraft were sent to assist ground crews.
