A major wildfire burning near Agios Vasileios, a coastal settlement in Viotia in central Greece, left around 500 people, mostly summer visitors, stranded in the area on Friday as strong winds made firefighting efforts extremely difficult.
The fire broke out in agricultural and forest land near the settlement, located on the Gulf of Corinth, and continued to burn around the village, according to Viotia Deputy Regional Governor Giorgos Dasiotis.
“The fire is around the village,” Dasiotis said, adding that powerful winds in the area were constantly changing direction, creating dangerous and unpredictable conditions.

Speaking to Kathimerini English Edition, Katerina Karanatsi, a tourist in Agios Vasileios, said the fire had reached the settlement and that there was no way out of the village.
