A wildfire on the outskirts of Thessaloniki prompted partial evacuations on Saturday, while a separate house fire in the central Greek city of Volos claimed the life of a 65-year-old man, according to Greek daily Kathimerini.
The wildfire broke out on Saturday afternoon in an area of low vegetation in the suburb of Pylaia, east of Thessaloniki. Authorities issued two emergency alerts through Greece's 112 warning system, urging residents in affected areas to evacuate as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
A total of 27 firefighters, supported by 12 fire engines, volunteers, two firefighting aircraft, and four helicopters, were deployed to battle the flames.
The incident is the latest in a series of fires to affect the Thessaloniki area. Earlier this month, another blaze erupted at an industrial facility near the city, while a separate fire in an industrial zone produced a toxic smoke cloud.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at a single-family home in Volos shortly before 1:00 a.m. After extinguishing the blaze, emergency crews discovered the body of a 65-year-old man, who was believed to have been living alone.
