Α drug trafficking network operated one of the largest cannabis plantations discovered in Greece in recent years, cultivating 6,290 cannabis plants on a farm near Xylokastro, Corinthia, police said on Wednesday. The investigation began last October after police obtained suspects’ phone numbers and secured surveillance warrants.

Investigators tracked purchases of plastic pots, fertilizers and agricultural supplies before identifying the farm, which contained greenhouses, a water reservoir and a two-story building. According to court documents, suspects used encrypted applications and other counter-surveillance measures.

Police allege the network’s main defendant, an Albanian national previously declared an undesirable person by Greek authorities, traveled with his partner to Amsterdam to obtain improved cannabis seeds.

Authorities raided the property on June 10, uprooting 6,290 plants and arresting suspects in parallel operations. The network reportedly sought wholesale profits of about €2.5 million.

Seven defendants were jailed pending trial.
